Working With Overseas Web Contractors
If you are looking for an inexpensive way of developing a website, you may be considering looking at someone from overseas to work on it. While this can give good results if you find the right contractor, there are a number of things that you really need to think about before you go down this path.
Unlike an agency in the United States that is experienced in providing full lifecycle website development services, overseas web designers are not usually the right place to go to have a full service delivered from scratch. In fact, many will expect you to give them guidance, not the other way around. Therefore, you need to have a very strong idea of exactly what you want on your website, including a list of pages, the functionality you want on the site, and how you want the site organized. Of course, it is better that you understand this anyway; when you’re working with someone overseas, this understanding is essential so that you can be very clear about what you want them to deliver.
One major issue that you are likely to encounter is a language barrier. If you’re working with someone from a non-English speaking country, you can’t expect them to have the same command of the English language that you do. Before you make a decision, talk to a number of contractors so you can evaluate their English language skills. However, even if you do this, there are still likely to be gaps. Therefore, you will need to be patient when you work with them and give them simple and clear instructions. Follow up regularly to make sure that your instructions have been understood, and that things are progressing as you want. In fact, it is often best to regard yourself as being their project manager, especially if the person works entirely on his or her own.
Another thing to think about is how exactly you are going to pay the contractor. For instance, if you are thinking of sending them a check, you need to think again. This can lead to a delay of up to a month before they actually see the money. As an alternative, you could consider using a wireless service such as Trans-Fast to send them money, or you could use PayPal if they have an account. It is also worthwhile considering using a freelance sites such as Guru or Elance, since these will take your payment and then pay the contractor only once you are satisfied with the contractor’s work.
Keep in mind that there are a huge number of overseas web designers – and that not all of them are good. The same applies to domestic web designers as well. Therefore it is essential to look at reviews posted by other people who have used the contractor, and it always pays to find someone who has been busy consistently for at least a year. Before you award any contract, ask a lot of questions so you can make sure that the designer is knowledgeable. Also, make sure that they respond quickly – if you end up waiting a couple of days for them to get back to you, walk away.
